31 miles in May. From Tui to Santiago. One step at a time.

Tuesday 5th May

This May, I’m walking 31 miles for Dementia UK, and I’m doing it on the Camino Portugués, the route from Tui in Galicia to Santiago de Compostela.

The full walk is longer than 31 miles, so in essence I’m walking part of the Camino to help fund Dementia UK’s specialist nurses, who provide advice and support when families need it most. Every step on that stretch will be for them.

Thirty-one miles is a real distance. The last two years have taught me exactly how real. Mobility and balance issues, the kind that make a flight of stairs feel like a negotiation, turned walking into something I had to learn again, slowly, on purpose. I’m still learning. Walking is the medicine and the metric, both.

I’m not fast, and definitely not graceful at all! But I can walk, and I can do that for a great cause.

So when I heard about Dementia UK’s Walk 31 Miles in May, the challenge felt right; not modest, not small, but possible. I am, more than anything, grateful to be doing it at all.
