I'm cycling 300 miles for Dementia UK

At the start of June I'm riding the Pauline Porter Populaire, from Chepstow to Anglesey and back again. It's nearly 400 miles over three days, with an Everest's worth of climbing along the way. Since Dementia UK is running a cycling fundraiser this June I thought it was an excellent fit and a chance to make a difference, rather than just ride a long way.

My lovely mum Bette was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2021 and is gradually deteriorating. She's in a home now, and still happy in herself, but that's not everyone's experience, and Dementia UK is on the frontline helping to ensure no family faces dementia alone£33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour. Just £8 can cover the telephone costs for two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline.

Thank you lovely folks

Monday 2nd Jun
A big heartfelt thanks to everyone who's chipped in, I've had to up the target. Here's mum being the greatest granny in happier times :-)

Here's the route!

Monday 2nd Jun
DAY 1
Heading north into the Usk Valley then up and over the Black Mountains to Honey Cafe. Follow the Wye Valley, on the old Mid-Wales Railway track bed in places, then utilise parts of the old A470 to Rhayader and then to Llandidloes on quieter roads.

The fun begins up to Llyn Clywedog reservoir on the west side and over the Machynlleth Mountain Road with views of Cadair Idris on the horizon; perhaps one of the best roads in the UK. Cross the Dyfi into Snowdonia and stick to the estuary & coast going through Aberdyfi & Tywyn to get to Kings YHA .
Distance: 225km
Climb: 3686m

DAY 2
Head to Dolgellau and climb up to Llyn Trawsfynydd on quiet roads for a fast descent on the main road to the first control at Tan-y-Bwlch Station Tea Rooms on the Ffestiniog Railway.

Through Beddgelert then pass west of Snowdon to Rhyd Ddu and on to Menai Bridge for the second control. Come back over Pen y Pass from the north before back to Beddgelert. Then along the coast past Harlech Castle and over Barmouth Bridge to Kings YHA for the second night.
Distance: 173km
Climb: 2934m

DAY 3
Heading back up the hill to once again see Cadair Idris’ peak and towards Cross Foxes. Follow the NCN over to Dyfi Forest and valley before up and over into the Carno. Pass through Newtown then up and over into the quiet Teme Valley to Knighton.

Head south keeping within Wales to Hay on Wye and Gospel Pass, Wales’ highest paved road with its stunning views across the Wye Valley! Descend into Llanthony Valley, and Treats for a well-earned cake.

The final leg awaits to Monmouth and the Wye Valley once more; finishing off by passing Tintern Abbey then back to the Arrivée.
Distance: 221km
Climb: 3925m
