Taking on the Lakeland 24 Peaks for Dementia UK

Apparently I didn’t have enough to do in September 🙃

Alongside an academic deadline on the 19th, I’ve somehow signed myself up to a fundraising challenge…

Why Dementia UK?

This is a cause incredibly close to my heart. I lost my grandparents and other family members to dementia, and I’ve seen first-hand just how devastating its impact can be - not only for the person living with dementia, but for everyone who loves them.

The official challenge is to walk 30 miles during September. As 30 miles is fairly run-of-the-mill territory for me, it didn’t feel quite right asking people to sponsor me for something I already know I can comfortably do… so I’ve made it spicy 😂

I’m taking on the Lakeland 24 Peaks Challenge - solo, over two consecutive days.

The route incorporates 24 Lakeland peaks above 2,000 feet, including four above 3,000 feet, taking in some of the most dramatic scenery in the Lake District - including Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, as well as Helvellyn, Great Gable, Great End and the Langdales.

I’ll cover 30+ miles (50 km) and climb around 3,600+ metres (11,800+ ft) across the two days. Day one is 15+ miles with 1,900+ m of ascent, followed the next morning by another 16+ miles and 1,700+ m of climbing.

I’ll be doing it solo - although if anyone fancies joining me for either day, you are so welcome!

If you’d like to sponsor me, every donation - however small - will support Dementia UK and families living with the realities of dementia.

My Updates

Wee fundraiser update… Done did it 🙌🏼

Thursday 1st Oct
I’ve been quiet whilst September has been… a month.

I spent the first half squeezing in a reduced training schedule before my course submission deadline - and the next evening I was hit by a car whilst stationary. Cue a day at the Police Station and A&E being treated for shock. Not quite the taper I’d planned!

Attempt one on Sunday was abandoned thanks to gale force wind and hail at the first summit - so I came back the next morning and started my two-day challenge again:

27 summits
49.48 km / 30.75 miles
3,623 m / 11,887 ft total ascent (nearly the height of Mount Fuji)

Add in the training and abandoned first attempt and September totalled:

92.1 km / 57.2 miles
7,553 m / 24,780 ft of ascent

That’s around 85% of the height of Everest climbed this month.

Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored, shared or sent messages of support along the way - especially the MVPs checking I was alive throughout 😂 I appreciate you all so much 💜

Thank you to my Sponsors
