I'm jogging one mile a day for Dementia UK

This April, I'm jogging one mile each day and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone.

My dad, George, was diagnosed with vascular dementia a few years ago.  Since then, I’ve seen him slowly lose his memory, have worrying spells where he is confused, agitated and distressed, and grow increasingly dependent. Everyday activities such as cooking a meal he is now not able to undertake.  Much of his care has fallen to our family, with limited support from local services.

I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. Just £8 can cover the telephone costs for two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Anything you can donate would be gratefully appreciated!

Thank you!

Challenge complete!

Wednesday 30th Apr
CHALLENGE COMPLETED!

A pre-work 5k run this morning completed my ‘Jog 1 Mile a Day in April to raise money for Dementia UK’ challenge.

30 days 📅
47 miles ran 🏃🏼
£546 raised 💰

My father, George, was diagnosed with vascular dementia a few years ago so this is a cause close to my heart.

There is still time to donate and with it being payday I’m asking anyone who can, however small, to please spare a few £!

Halfway there and a stark reminder!

Tuesday 15th Apr
Day 15 done and I’ve reached the halfway point. And today provided a massive reminder as to why I’m doing this…

Popping into my  dad’s house at lunchtime I found his place empty.  Panic, siblings alerted, police called.  Thanks to the camera we installed at his front door and an AirTag in his shoe, we were  able to locate him fairly quickly, albeit nearly 2 miles away from his home!

The Police made a safeguarding referral, and with another social services assessment due imminently, hopefully this makes them take some action and LISTEN!

Families all over the UK are going through similar  traumatic events like this every day.  They need your support. A donation of just £8 could cover the telephone costs of two people calling Dementia UK’s helpline for expert, compassionate support from a specialist dementia nurse.

Please donate 🙏🏼

Launch Day!

Friday 28th Mar
Wow, it’s only day 1 of launching this challenge and we are already over 95% of the initial fundraising target!  Thanks to all those who have donated so far 👊🏼

Dad’s dementia

Tuesday 25th Mar

My dad, George, was diagnosed with vascular dementia a few years ago.  Since then, I’ve seen him slowly lose his memory, have worrying spells where he is confused, agitated and distressed, and grow increasingly dependent. Everyday activities such as cooking a meal he is now not able to undertake.  Much of his care has fallen to our family, with limited support from local services.

More needs to be done to support individuals and their families, and funding is needed for critical research into cures and preventative measures for this horrible disease.
