March Dog Walking Challenge

I'm walking 62K with my dog for Dementia UK

This March, I'm walking 62K with my dog and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. Just £8 can cover the telephone costs for two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Blog Post 1 - My Why!

Thursday 20th Feb
Hi All,

Welcome to my donation page and thank you for donating. For some of you that may not know, I lost my Grandad to Alzheimers/Dementia a few years ago, and our lives have not been the same since.

My grandad would light up the room with his contagious laugh. He was always known as someone who would always do the right thing and give back to the community which is where our family tries to follow in his footsteps.

Seeing his deterioration over 9 years was a painful watch, and even sadder to look back on photos now. Slowly, he changed becoming more anxious, refusing food and becoming more irritable. We are all still incredibly grateful that he ALWAYS remembered who we were which cannot be said for other families losing a loved one to Alzheimers/Dementia.  When you are in the thick of caring for someone who has dementia, you don't notice the physical changes straight away such as the weight loss because you become so used to it. For us, looking back now and seeing the weight he lost whilst suffering with dementia is heartbreaking.

We are very grateful that from initial diagnosis to his passing we had 9 wonderful years of time with him, but it still does not fill the void of losing him and in such a cruel way too.

I want to do this walk to raise awareness and contribute to the fantastic work that Dementia UK do to make sure that other families do not have to suffer in the same way that we have. We need more research, more funding and more solutions to curing this terrible disease.

In Memory of my amazing Grandad - Kenneth Potter. Gone but never forgotten.
