I'm walking 30 miles in September

I’m walking 30 Miles in September and raising funds for families affected by dementia. I would be grateful for your support.

An £8 donation could cover the telephone costs of two families seeking support through Dementia UK's free Helpline. £33 could fund an hour with a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse, helping a family with practical solutions and emotional support.

Thank you!

For dad

Wednesday 10th Sep
In August 2006 the day after my daughter's first birthday my dad was taken ill. That day we discovered my dad had progressive dementia. For the next 3 years I lost my dad daily a little more, my dad was more rock and the one constant I had always had. I was just 25 and had thought I would have my dad as a granddad for both my daughter and my son who was born later that year.

I rushed through things as I wanted my best friend with me on the important stages of my life, I got married so I could have him by my side down the aisle and to hold my hand.

Quickly dementia took away so much from our relationship and it meant that my children would never have benefited from Dad as I did. In November  2009 I sat with my dad in hospital as the it had taken hold of him and he asked if he could leave me,  my last words to him was only if you know how much you have meant to me and how much I love you. He then took his last breath.

This is such an awful illness and even now 16 years later there is so little to offer sufferers, so each day I walk, I walk to support a cause that needs money to aid vital research to try and hopefully one day find a prevention or cure.

Dementia is the long goodbye that no family should suffer the pain of.

Always and forever love you dad
