Winter Reading Challenge

I'm doing Winter Reading Challenge for Dementia UK

This winter, I'm reading and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Supporting people with dementia to keep reading

Monday 14th Sep
Supporting individuals with dementia in their pursuit of reading remains important. While dementia may present challenges to reading due to changes in brain function affecting visual processing, focus, and narrative comprehension, books serve as a vital resource for cognitive stimulation and shared interests. Organizations such as Dementia UK promote initiatives like the Reading Agency’s 'Reading Well: Books on Prescription' and the 'Reading Friends' project to foster connection for those who feel isolated. Practical approaches such as reading aloud, utilizing audiobooks, or engaging with picture books and poetry can assist those who find independent reading difficult. Furthermore, family carers are encouraged to prioritize their own well-being by setting aside time for personal reading and leveraging shared literary activities to sustain meaningful connections with their loved ones.
