I'm walking 62 Miles in October

I’m walking 62 miles this October to support families affected by dementia… including my own.

Earlier this year, my stepdad John was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Right now, he’s still quite independent, he enjoys getting out and about locally and, most days, he’s very much still ‘with us’. But we’re also starting to see changes. His memory is fading bit by bit, week by week.

The hardest part is knowing what lies ahead. Dementia is cruel and unpredictable, and while we cherish every moment we still have with John as ‘John’, we know there may come a time when he won’t recognise the people who love him most. That’s a painful reality no family should have to face alone.

That’s why I’m taking on this challenge and raising funds for Dementia UK, to help make sure families like ours can get the specialist support they need when dementia turns life upside down.

💙 Just £10 can cover the cost of two calls to Dementia UK’s free Helpline.  A vital lifeline for families looking for advice or just someone to listen.

💙 £33 could fund an hour with an Admiral Nurse, a dementia specialist who helps families navigate the emotional and practical challenges of caring for a loved one.

If you’re able to support me, I’d be so grateful, every donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference.

Thank you so much 💙

Injuries

Tuesday 28th Oct
I’m really gutted to be posting this but I feel like the likelihood of me completing my challenge is slim at this point. Last Monday I fell over and twisted my ankle which set me back a few days. I’ve pushed on (when I probably shouldn’t have) and now it’s swollen. Then on Saturday I developed a pretty hefty blister on my right heel. Currently sliding about in crocs as I can’t bare any other shoes right now.
The reality is I’ve probably completed the challenge twice over. Every day I walk the kids to school and I walk to work and I haven’t included these in my total mile. I wanted to do the challenge with ‘extra’ walks.
I know I’ve got 4 days of the month left but it’s unlikely I’ll log 15 miles in that time. I hope I’ve not let anyone down but I don’t think my poor feeties can take much more ☹️
I promise that once the swelling goes down and my blister is heeled I’ll walk those 15 miles 🙏

Week one… ✅

Tuesday 7th Oct
7 days down and 14 miles in the bag. On track and ready to bank up some more miles tomorrow with a walk with another one of my lovely friends, Michelle!

I’ve known Michelle more than 30 years, she’s always been part of my life since John has been with my mum. So when she came to my house to drop something off for me one day last year and he didn’t recognise her that was an another sign to us John’s memory loss was more than just part of the aging process.

Each day now there is something else he forgets or needs reminding of. It’s worrying to think that one day he might forget us too.

Thank you Sian

Saturday 4th Oct
An early (for me!) Saturday morning walk through Blaby up to Crow Mills and along the canal with one of old my school friends, Sian. We don’t catch up often enough so it was lovely to do this together. Thanks for coming with me 🫶 Hopefully we’ll continue it past this challenge. May have had a cheeky cuppa and a cake too… 🤫 Thankfully my name sake “storm Amy” held off and the rain didn’t start until I was driving home 👍 Back on track… day 4 and 8 miles in the bag 🙌

These things are sent to try us…

Wednesday 1st Oct
In the words of Galinda (aka Glinda) “these things are sent to try us” (Wicked fans can hear her singing it).  Day one and had to cancel my walk with my friend Emma as Arlo is ill! So instead of Burbage common and lunch I did a whizz round the village after the school run (halfway with Nat and chase) and a pit stop by the corner shop to drop my Vinted parcels off! Still on track though and more (longer) walks planned for the  weekend! 👍
