I'm walking 30 Miles in September for Dementia UK

This September, I'm walking 30 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

Our Dementia Journey ❤️

Tuesday 18th Aug

I never really imagined that I would be writing a blog like this.

In 2023, my mum was diagnosed with mixed dementia — vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Although we had noticed changes in her for some time, getting that diagnosis still felt like a huge moment for our family.

Looking back, we had started noticing symptoms after Covid. At first, it was easy to put things down to getting older, being tired, or simply having a lot going on. But gradually, the changes became more noticeable. Her memory, confusion and ability to manage things that had once been second nature to her started to change.

Then came the diagnosis.

Dementia is difficult to explain unless you have experienced it within your family. It isn’t simply about forgetting things. It can change someone’s confidence, independence, personality and the way they see the world. And it affects the people who love them too.

Sadly, Mum’s dementia is very progressive, and watching someone you love change because of this cruel illness is incredibly difficult.

There are good days and there are really difficult days. There are moments of laughter, moments of frustration, moments that break my heart and moments that remind me of the mum I know and love so much.

But Mum is still Mum. ❤️

That’s something I want to remind myself of throughout this journey. Dementia may have changed many things, but it hasn’t changed how much I love her.

This September, I’m walking 30 miles for Dementia UK to help raise money and awareness for a charity that supports families like ours.

I’m doing these 30 miles for Mum.

For all the families who are navigating dementia.

For the people living with it.

And for the hope that, one day, families won’t have to face this devastating disease in the same way.

If you’ve taken the time to read this, thank you. And if you are able to donate, no matter how small the amount, it would mean so much to me and my family.

30 miles. One very special reason — my mum. ❤️
