I'm walking and singing 60 Miles in June for Dementia UK

This June, I'm walking and singing 60 Miles and raising funds to help ensure no family faces dementia alone. I'm taking on the challenge for Dementia UK, the specialist dementia nursing charity, and would be grateful for your support.

Every mile I walk, I'll sing a song whilst walking and video my progress which I'll be sharing on my Once Upon a Tune Yorkshire Facebook page so please give me a follow to watch my progress.

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £33 could fund a new dementia specialist Admiral Nurse to spend an hour helping a family in the community, offering practical solutions and emotional support to cope with their loved one’s distressed behaviour.

Thank you!

My Updates

60 Miles, 60 Songs, One Incredible Cause

Thursday 21st May
If you know me, you’ll know that music is at the heart of absolutely everything I do.

Through Once Upon a Tune Yorkshire (search for me on Facebook), I spend my days visiting care homes, assisted living settings, adult day centres, nurseries and community groups, using music to bring joy, encourage interaction and create meaningful moments of connection. One of the most incredible things about music is its ability to reach people when words sometimes can’t. I see it every single week. Residents who are quiet begin singing every word to a song from their past. Feet tap. Hands clap. Eyes light up. Memories return, even if just for a moment.

Sadly, dementia is something that has affected my own family too.

My Nana had 14 children and even more grandchildren, and towards the end of her life, dementia sadly meant that she no longer recognised many of us. Although I have some incredibly special memories of singing with her and making music together during those final years, it was still heartbreaking to watch the decline in her memory and behaviour and to see the impact dementia has not only on the person living with it, but on the entire family around them.

That’s why this challenge means so much to me.

This June, I’ll be taking on Dementia UK’s “Walk 60 Miles in June” challenge to help raise money for families affected by dementia and to support the incredible work of Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, who provide specialist support and guidance to families facing dementia.

But because I can’t do anything normally… I’ve decided I’m not just walking 60 miles… I’m singing them too 🎶😂

Throughout June, I’ll be heading out on my walks whilst singing along the way and sharing little videos of the journey. I’m also inviting the wonderful care homes and groups I work with to sponsor a mile and send me song requests chosen by the residents. I’ll then record myself singing their chosen song whilst out walking and send the video back to the home for residents to enjoy.

I’m fully expecting some very confused looks from people passing me wandering around East Yorkshire singing into my phone… but if it spreads a little joy and helps raise money for such an important cause, then it’s worth every awkward stare 🤣

Thank you so much to anybody who donates, shares my page or supports me throughout the challenge. It genuinely means the world ❤️
